Privacy policy

Last updated

G for Girls Initiative ("GGI", "we", "us") is a community-based organisation registered in Kenya and based in Kwale. This policy explains what personal data we collect through gforgirlsinitiative.org, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We are the data controller for that information, and we handle it in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

What we collect

We only collect information you choose to give us. There is no account to create and nothing is required to read this site.

  • Contact form — your first name, last name, email address, phone number if you provide one, and the message you write.
  • Newsletter sign-up — your email address, and nothing else.
  • Giving enquiries — the amount you indicate and the contact details you send us. We do not collect card numbers, mobile money PINs or bank credentials anywhere on this site.
  • Server logs — our hosting provider records standard technical information such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested. This is ordinary web server logging, used to keep the site running and secure.

Cookies and tracking

This site does not use advertising cookies, analytics cookies, tracking pixels or social media trackers. We do not build profiles of visitors and we do not sell or rent anyone's data — not ever, and not to anyone.

The site stores one small item in your browser's local storage: a record of which announcement banner you have dismissed, so it does not reappear after you close it. That value never leaves your device and is not personal data.

Why we use it

We use what you send us to do the thing you contacted us about — answer your question, follow up on a partnership, arrange a donation, or add you to the update list you asked to join.

We do not use your details for any unrelated purpose, and we will not add you to a mailing list because you sent us a contact form. Those are separate choices.

Children's data

GGI works with children and young people, and we take this part seriously.

This website is written for adults — parents, partners, donors, volunteers and community members. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children through this site, and we ask that children do not submit the forms here.

Personal data about the children in our programmes is collected offline, through our schools and safeguarding processes, under our safeguarding and child protection policies. It is not gathered through this website and is not held on it.

If you believe a child has submitted personal information through this site, contact us and we will delete it.

Who else sees it

Your information stays with GGI staff and committee members who need it to respond to you. We do not sell, rent or trade personal data.

We rely on service providers to run the site and our email, and they process data on our instructions — a web host, a domain and email provider, and an email delivery service for messages sent from our forms. They may only use the data to provide that service to us.

We will disclose information where the law requires it, or where doing so is necessary to protect a child or another person at risk of harm. Our safeguarding obligations come first.

How long we keep it

We keep personal data only for as long as it serves the purpose you gave it to us for, and then we delete it. Correspondence relating to donations and governance is kept for as long as our financial and reporting obligations require.

You can ask us to delete your information sooner, and unless we are required to keep it, we will.

Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you have rights over the personal data we hold about you. You can exercise any of them by writing to us — there is no charge, and you do not need to give a reason.

  • Be told how your data is being used — which is what this page is for.
  • Ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Have inaccurate or incomplete information corrected.
  • Ask us to delete your data where we have no continuing reason to keep it.
  • Object to how we are using it, or ask us to restrict that use.
  • Withdraw consent at any time, including unsubscribing from updates.

Keeping it safe

The site is served over an encrypted connection, and access to the mailbox that receives form submissions is limited to the people who need it.

No system is perfectly secure, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. If we ever become aware of a breach affecting your personal data, we will act on it and notify you and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner as the law requires.

Questions and complaints

Write to us at info@gforgirlsinitiative.org, call +254 700 413 704, or post to P.O. Box 172-80402, Kwale, Kenya. We would always rather hear from you first and put something right.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your data, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner of Kenya.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes we will update the revision date at the top of the page. If a change materially affects how we handle information you have already given us, we will tell you directly rather than rely on you noticing.
